45949 MoonSatellite - Analog Way

It's in the bed of twisted and reverberating synth waves that the sequencer weaves a helix movement whose circular beat snakes a maudlin ambient melody of the synthesizer. From the start, Analog Way Part 01 shows what ANALOG WAY will be made of. This new album of MoonSatellite brings nothing new to the catalog of my dear friend Lone Wolf. Very good cosmic rock that follows the fictitious highway of the Cosmos in tints of analogue electronic music (EM) that were the essence of Jean-Michel Jarre's first works of interplanetary dimension. And that's right! After 15 albums and/or album-downloads and 13 years further than his Sequenzer - Volume 1, the musician from Nantes continues to expand the boundaries of cosmic EM in a mix of floating rhythms and catchy melodies rolling and flowing within enchanting lunar setting. To put it simply, let's say that our ears sit on board a space shuttle that leaves to discover 36 minutes of pure happiness for t h e cosmic rock lovers. The evolution of Analog Way Part 01 takes us to a pulsating rhythmic structure lovingly bitten by synth harmonies whose weeping or simply spectral cosmic approach is hard to pin down.

It's under hoops of mist dissolving and agonizing in their steel blue texture that the pulsations of Analog Way Part 02 command these floating rhythms which feed the beats of this new album of the French musician which is offers as much in a manufactured CD as in download. Let's talk about the sonic setting and this combination of cosmic sounds from the vintage years and more modern years with new synthesizers and their sample bank. It gives an unctuous base to the 8 tracks of ANALOG WAY. The sequencer highlights on this Analog Way Part 02 a bass-sequence line that initiates this ambivalent rhythm and a line of melodious arpeggios that graze each other in a structure dominated by this melancholic vision as poltergeist of the synth. And these melodies, aphrodisiacs for the pai ns of the tortured souls, are also masters of the 36 minutes of this short album. In very good and restrained impulses, the elastic rhythm comes and goes in the moans of this synth whose dimensions remain always to be seized. These moans and the orchestrations are very touching and guide us towards short phases of meditative reveries. We dock to Analog Way Part 03 and its sequences that flutter softly while hopping on the tip of their rhythmic harmonies in a more chthonian universe whose responsibility belongs to discreet hoarse voices. Here, even the timbre of the synth is different with layers that describe semi-consumed circles, giving more the impression of drifting than moving forward. Always very moving, the mournful melodies decorate the decor of Analog Way Part 04 whose rhythmic structure clings to this ascending movement of the bass-sequences in a choreography of graceful movements of an amorphous slowness.

This is the prelude to the heart of ANALOG WAY and its powerful cosmic rock that is Analog Way Part 05. You can't get more J-MJarre than on this track with its rhythm bordering a cosmic rock and techno beat. The sequencer weaves one of those circular strobe structures that fuel the rhythmic shapes on this album, while the percussions lean towards a more technoïd tendency in an ever more seductive pool of sound effects. In contrast, Analog Way Part 06 emerges from its atmospheric opening and melodic yet plaintive strands with a heavy, slow pace. A short line of flickering sequences that come and go is the basis of this rhythm that takes root via a numbing bass layer. A series of circular bass-sequences extend a long filament of rhythmic strobes that encircle the ambient melody laid down over synth layers which are fluttering with a chloroformed essence. The cosmic haze radiates its charms on this rhythm structure contrasting of its two parallel sequence lines that never have the same velocity flight. A superb title that depicts the magic of the MoonSatellite universe. This journey of intertwined sequences and of ephemeral melodic sequenced appearances continues on Analog Way Part 07 whose muffled pulsating rhythm extends its vibrations in a cosmic track filled of lunar orchestrations. Analog Way Part 08 ends this rather short album of my friend Lone Wolf with this slightly gyrating sequence movement that goes back and forth in a more atmospheric cosmic sound mass. This hypnotic come and go supports this melody of weeping arpeggios that lays a dose of hypnosis between our ears and clings to the restrained surges of cymbal rattlings sown in the vastness of a Cosmos faithfully depicted in music.

Built on the premise of the slow and evolving rhythms of 45 and Medusa, ANALOG WAY graces the MoonSatellite discography with another beautiful album of cosmic EM. And if you are familiar with the universes of Lone Wolf and Jean-Michel Jarre, you will find that the 36 minutes of this album pass cruelly too quickly. We can not find better in the genre...

gr-332 - Christian & Beasley - Stories

It was in early 2018 as part of the Snow Ball, a mini festival held in Rugeley in the Staffordshire district of England where 6 musicians took turns playing a 30-minute segment of music, that STORIES took root. Originally offered on the virtual ticket concept, the recording of the two acts by John Christian and Adrian Beasley has been remixed and mastered in its entirety for the purposes of this new manufactured CD which is offered by the Dutch label Groove nl. The 2 30-minutes tracks are merged into one long 59-minute piece of fully improvised electronic music (EM) where the atmospheric phases are rerouted by Berlin School and England School rhythmic structures and where the flavors of Airsculpture can be heard in the evolution of the 3 parts of STORIES.

A first chord falls and sounds like a distant chime, bringing to our ears the sound of sonic waves and muffled beats that evaporate when the keyboard lets its chords wander under synth layers that have this industrial bluish color. A bass stratum crawls through the background as softly Stories Part 1 prepares its musical homily. Its first few minutes are very atmospheric with a Rick Wright-like keyboard that scatters its keys under banks of gothic mist. A pulsating bass line overlaps this phase a little after the 4th minute, establishing a latent rhythm that attempts to ascend under layers of a more hazy mist. The synth releases jazz-like solos that remain as discreet as the evasive keyboard chords. The rising rhythm of this sequential bass line hangs tightly on the structure whose atmospheric texture slowly fades away to leave more room for the synthesizer's improvised expressions. I hear some Klaus Schulze from the 10th minute onwards, where the rhythmic structure changes the nature of its tone as well as its flow with another line from the sequencer that makes tumble the rhythmic phase of Stories Part 1's last moments. Getting rid of the rumbling shadow, the 2 sequences coordinate an undulating biphasic movement. Stories Part 2 then whispers a soft rhythm that rises and falls with a certain fluidity under the numerous facets of the synth whose musical haze remains the main asset. We enter a superb Berlin School phase with an ascending rhythmic structure that unlocks its speed with more and more accentuated jumping chords from the sequencer. I can still hear Schulze in the synths that let out sonic cirrostratus. These vaporous layers become more and more compact, responding to the rhythmic gravitational accentuation. The solos come in from the 6th minute. It is shortly after that that the sequencer dribbles its jumping arpeggios in a frenzy that now flirts with the violence of England School. The synth takes on a guitar-like texture in this electronic rock phase worthy of the good times of Tangerine Dream in the vintage years. A great moment in this album that fills my ears with pure happiness until the 18th minute when the ghostly solos o f the synth conclude a pact of silence with the rhythm. Impossible not to make a link with Airsculpture here!

The hollow breezes, vapors and industrial drizzle of the finale brings us to Stories 3 and those sonic hoops that evaporate in a strong gust of wiisshh and woosshh. A beat remains. Deaf, it disappears under this immense sound mass where a ghostly melody starts to glitter, weaving earworms by a string of moving arpeggios. It's the call for rhythm! We reach the 3-minute mark and already the sequencer is looking for the rhythmic pattern to offer us. Hesitant, uncertain, it ends up deploying a violent gallop made up of sharp kicks which structure a rhythm at first spasmodic listening. The synthesizers multiply one of the zones of mists on a dystopian silvered and sharpened chant. We are in the most violent phase of STORIES with this rhythmic structure that carries several tonal forms, including organic radiations as well as a lyrical vision, galloping with intensity under ha unting and evasive synth solos. Polyform in their seductive natures, these solos change harmonic texture to drop twisted filaments a bit psychedelic on a rhythm that decreases its intensity as soon as the 15 minutes barrier is crossed. The last jolts of the sequencer stretch over a distance of 5 minutes, leading Stories 3 into an atmospheric finale that brings the loop of this wild 3rd part of STORIES full circle.

Improvised music is always subject to long redundant phases! An element that is absent from this new album by John Christian and Adrian Beasley that has everything to please aficionados of the Berlin and England School styles. The atmospheric periods are filled with details that are tasty in the ear and cling to latent rhythmic structures that eventually explode...sometimes with a seductive violence.

gr-321 - Peters, Martin - Deeper Understanding

The first sequence organizes bouncing balls in a synthesized haze. The cycle is almost perfect with 3 lower chords and another series of more musical arpeggios that circle in the background. It feels like this circular loop either picks up a little more speed or gets heavier as the haze intensifies in the background. Balls are added in the growing subtlety of Gone that faint explosions radiate of a more rumbling mass of sounds! Faster or fuller, this repetitive structure becomes the ball of a stationary rhythm that is inspired by the mechanical and repetitive movements of an escalator. And yet, the framework of Gone evolves. Either by adding more jumping keys, or by adding another line that hops in a canon effect on the previous one. There are also these synth effects that add a slab of paranoid poetry, a legitimate reminder of Klaus Schulze's ambiences in Dreams. These elements put together add a layer of intensity that seems to have no lim i t in the progression of the music. And it is with astonishment that we notice that we are already at the 14th minute. Gone deflates faster than it progresses, reaching a sleepy slowness in the land of the Aether maintained by that more intense fog that has carefully enveloped its final sequence, unless it is its ghost, 90 seconds before its final orchestral breath. The minimalist music! Do you like it? It's the sweet rendezvous Martin Peters invites you to. Ron Boots describes this musician from the Netherlands as an excellent sculptor of sequences. He's been working in the EM spheres since the early 2000's with a first album entitled Attorks released in 2002. DEEPER UNDERSTANDING is his 3rd solo album, the other being Angels of Nowhere in 2016. At the same time, he works with Rene de Bakker for the Beyond Berlin project which has released 5 albums since Music For Cosmic Nights 2013 in 2013.

Consistent with the idea of what one might have of luminous particles dancing with thei r tonal shadows, Particles is built around a chime movement amplified by five. The Particles dance briskly, shimmering their reflections that fattens the dancing mass like a wriggling pool of hand-fed fish on a sunny noon. A bass-pulse carves a sly rhythmic structure that moves back and forth on this carousel that has no control over its arpeggios. The merging of the two elements casts a shadow over the arrhythmic capers of the bouncing marbles, creating a short bridge in the third part the track where the vitality of the marbles shines again with clearer tinkling of new bells along quiet and nice synth solos over a rhythm structure that has become sly again. The Wasp feeds slightly on Particles, especially its last third. A more musical track with the sequencer, synth, synth bass and chimes uniting their disparate in a perfect circle from the outside and a little less from the inside. I feel more like I'm hearing a Tubular Bells remix, played fast, here than in Particles. Platis f e atures a rhyme played on a piano and keyboard. The main segment is sequenced and is adding to this long, minimalist structure filled with nuances each time, or almost every time, that Platis goes up, down, and back to its starting point. Like a longer escalator! Exploiting its Gone-like structure, the track stores different keyboard chords, some lively and some orchestral, in a fluidity and complicity between the harmony and the ascending rhythm structure. A unique blend of Klaus Schulze and Mike Oldfield for pure happiness for the ears.
If you like minimalist music, DEEPER UNDERSTANDING is the kind of album that will seduce you long before you fall asleep. Martin Peters has a flair and knows how far he can stretch his repetitive sequences and when to coat them with another layer before a minute too long. A good album where everything is similar, but in the end, nothing is really the same.
