[Groove] E-News 1239 9th May 2021

Hello Groove fans,

Here some news from Tangerine Dream.

THE SESSIONS VII
We are very sorry that we have to postpone the release of the SESSIONS VII live EP to an unspecified date, as the band is currently working very intensively on their new album, the follow-up of their successful Quantum Gate album, it comes to this unanticipated delay.
Probably the SESSIONS VII will not be released until June 2021 on our label. This also postpones the pre-sale. We apologize very much for the circumstances.

We as Groove will keep it on the site but with the distinct mention  that we will not keep orders hanging on it.
As soon as we can order them (we infact already pre-ordered them!) we will let you know.

Some fans ask why we are not on Spotify. Well The musicians and we as publisher only get a very small amount of the money that goes into Spotify. To give you an idea. Back in December 2019,you where  receiving a $753 check from Spotify, as compensation for 206,011 streams. Rounding up, the sum represents a per-stream royalty rate of $0.0037 – And that was lower then 2018 Spotify royalty rate that was  about $0.0054 in that year. So even with more money comming in the musicians got less!!

Electronic Music that Groove releases is in a niche market. It will never reach the 200.000 streams mark! We could never releases this music through Spotify and make any income for the next release and the musician who made it.

The way Groove releases its music is from CD to CD. As money is recovered from a new release we can then releases the next one. And that means that you need to get a certain amount of income for the musicians and Groove it self. That is why we have besides our CD releases our own Download platform.  Where all releases are available as flac and MP3 with the artwork.

https://shop.groove.nl/

And there is Bandcamp. One of the best ways to get music to new fans.
So I hope you can understand why we don't use Spotify as much as we could.
By the way not ALL Groove releases are on the site and Bandcamp as sometimes we are only allowed to release the music as digital content.

67733 Boddy, Ian & Reuter, Markus - Outland

The last Ian Boddy and Markus Reuters collaboration dates to September 2017 with the album Stay. Available for download only, this album was inspired and guided by Memento, released a few months earlier. Well, even if composed and built remotely, OUTLAND is walking in Memento's footsteps. Enjoying a sound fauna up to the size of DiN's works, this 9th Boddy & Reuters' collaboration is an ambient one that is as intense and mysterious as ever and where the guitars of Markus get opposed to the Moog's deaf impulses and the prismatic chants of the synth as well as the Martenot Waves from our friend Ian Boddy. It is to Markus that we owe this album, he who initially composed the musical panoramas during the summer of 2020. He sent them to the English musician-synthesist who put meat around the framework of what would become OUTLAND. The pandemic was a game-changer by preventing the two friend-musicians from finishing it all together in the studio. T he remote and distanced sessions took a few extra months for an album that both artists wanted to see made on vinyl as well. Hence the 40 minutes of this album whose 6 titles are divided by two in order to fill both sides of the vinyl.

Undulating tones' waves, scarlet streaks, sound distortions, guitar textures and roaring layers, Citadel opens with an abysmal heaviness. The bass of the Moog blows under this fauna which is constantly growing heavier, and its deaf impulses structure this soft and muffled rhythm whose momentums are lost in an implosive sound mass. We are around the 4th minute and the slide guitar pitches its plaintive harmonies which merge with the spectral harmonies of the Martenot Waves. Imposing by its power, this first track of OUTLAND is like its 34 other minutes. Ambient and rowdy with constantly repressed rhythmic aims and the complexities of an album created from a distance, this new album-duel between Ian and Markus is as intense as dark. If the opening o f Citadel was carried out by the pain of tones, the transition to Parallels is no less easy. The guitar throws a series of resonant chords in a sonic turbulence coming from the agitation of percussive elements. Always creeping, the bass throbs lasciviously below the very Robert Fripp solos of Markus Reuters which adds a dexterity unknown to the works of Fripp. The sequences and percussive clicks ripen reflections, feeling their neurotic activities gained ground, for a rhythmic vision flirting with an Electronica which will not however fully see the light of day. Even with those eternal pushes of the Moog bass which remains unfathomable. The title piece leads this vast mass of sounds towards a more ambient texture with a cosmic ascendant. The guitar wanders here with soft and pinched chords, some like crumbled riffs, under a tonal sky streaked by the passage of cosmic stars. It's angelically pure until we hit the 5th minute barrier, where the chords dissolve and the scents of OUTLAN D ' first 12 minutes are rising back to our ears.

For vinyl purposes, Brood starts the B side of OUTLAND. It is a very nice ambient track structured in intensity with synth layers transported by the effects of murmurings which fly while taking different orientations. It is like the tonal colors with beautiful synth reflections, such as the howls of a guitar lost in this celestial traffic and whose points of agony transpose these chills that so make the soul sigh, sometimes even cry. Brood brings us to Trails, by far the fiercest track on this album. In a structure closer to Arc, or in a good Ian Boddy's energized England School, the pounding heavy ambient rhythm is propelled by a good bass line and a phenomenal collaborative work between those lively teeming sequences and good electronic percussions living in an enclosure always on the verge of being shortening. Markus' guitar spits out solos whose evasive King Crimson timbre is too close to ignore. We are heading towards the fina l with Home and its tears of Martenot Waves slipping behind the chords of a guitar that is no longer hungry.

Built in the optics of an LP which has limitations in time rather than in the capacities of a full CD, OUTLAND gives up big minutes of EM in favor of vinyl aficionados, thus risking to let many fans of Boddy & Reuters on their appetite. As a result, the album is built on the principles of vinyl from the 70's; either a first introductory title with a semblance of life, the second having more dynamism and the third taking refuge in ambient phases. This is the topo of OUTLAND! Hoping that there are leftovers (there are always leftovers!) that we could hear shortly, because here we have an excellent album. An album that skillfully doses mysticism, muffled and dark rhythms as well as ambiences just at the limit of distortion with the prismatic moans of the Martenot waves and the slide guitar. An imaginative cocktail from this eclectic duo who has always known how to extract th e best out of their music… just for the pleasure of our ears.

71892 Kontroll Raum - Check In

A familiar precept, it is with a rising wave of mist that Gentlemen, Start your Engines draws its musicality to put it in ears well-versed in ME introductions. Crumpling effects sculpt a gloomy vision well supported by menacing shadows and percussive effects thrown randomly of its slow evolution. Tam-tams witness this transformation into a chloroformed layer that makes floating its ample oscillating modulations with a slight Middle Eastern flavor in the hollow of its curves. If the percussions inject more speed, percussive effects in the style of Jean-Michel Jarre, from his Revolutions album, attract the attention of this ear always in search of diversified tonalities and which merge in hypnotic symbiosis with this slow rhythm of Gentlemen, Start Your Engines. A very good title whose two bubbling last minutes are an invitation to discover the very good polyrhythmic universe of CHECK IN. Kontroll-Raum is a new trio from the house of Manikin c o nsisted of Bas Broekhuis, Frank Rothe and Mario Schönwälder. Mario being the link between the two other musicians to be part of Broekhuis, Keller & Schönwälder and Filter-Kaffee with Frank Rothe. Two different universes which meet on structures in constant evolution and especially in a very beautiful polyrhythmic vision. Pandemic obliges, this album was conceived at distance and by video sessions assembled and mixed by Frank Rothe. Available in CD Digipack and in download, CHECK IN is an album of rhythms, percussions and percussive effects, giving 73 minutes of a ME that transcends the universe of BKS' colors and church parties.

Electronic sounds fluttering in a narrow corridor are at the origin of Escape 38. Once the first minute mark is passed, a very Teutonic BKS-like rhythm begins to pulse. At the limit, you could say a kind of train with looping effects of a synth-guitar spinning with more sharpness in the sonic delirium. And some 90 seconds later, another form of rhythm wi th limpid sequences becomes in a state of hesitation. Voice effects adorn this circular phase that the trio has chosen to make germinate ephemeral ideas. Sequences swirling with increasing intensity project this vision of emphasis as the rushes of textures become more and more pressing. A rumbling bass line adds to this circular rhythmic spiral with prismatic harmonies from that synth-guitar, while my ears pick up delicious vibrating jet effects. Intense, this rhythmic station ends up cutting the engines. We move on to Raum 23 and its eclectic pool of tones with African percussions. There are many percussive elements in this opening. The meshing of these elements creates the first rhythmic structure. It is a bit like being on a war footing with this insistent rhythm which finally becomes a good electronic rhythm moving forward under a tonal sky stained with heterogeneous tones of the most diversified. Become minimalist, Raum 23 continues its progression by dipping here and there in the tonal buffet of Kontroll-Raum. A very good title which finds its value by raising the volume of our amplifier.

For Alain is a good track with a sentimental flavor. Sequencer, bass line-pulses and a treasure trove of creativity from the rhythmic elements draw a fluid rhythm for the heaviness of its elements. A loop of harmonic elements rolls over the sensual approach of the bass line as the synth knits solos with a saxophone tinge. The rhythm takes a second flight as the synth readjusts its tone to offer beautiful whistling solos like that great whistler from the Cosmos, while the harmonies resurrect some of the flavors of Tangerine Dream. An excellent track! In a structure that rises and falls in a texture adorned with beautiful sound effects, For a Roadmovie is in the vein of the good moments of Fanger & Schönwälder. A humming track in an astral haze, the rubbery effect of the rhythmic chords resonates without altering the effect of the multiple layers and haze of synth. Th e further I go into CHECK IN, the more I like what I hear. Like the splendid C9 05-05 whose progressive structure, deployed in the rhythmic axes of BKS, ends up making us hear a contemporary remake of Klaus Schulze's Moondawn with Harald Grosskopf on drums. The good old days! The layers of fog and violins in the opening of Check Out give it a surreal Arabian cinema tinge. The sound texture is conceived in the artifices of synthesizers and their sound effects whose ample soporific embraces must constantly compete with sound and percussive effects, if not hand percussions. This is typical of the BKS universe which is quite omnipresent in the development of the tracks of this first Kontroll-Raum album. A pulsating sequence emerges a little before the 3rd minute. An oscillating rhythm line seeks the complicity of the rattles that have been introduced. The pulsating effect and the ascending path of the rhythmic line continue to work to structure a minimalist complicity, while a percussi v e texture sculpts a tremulous trance that a synth adorns of contemplative solos. Mutation on top of mutation, as much in the unfolding of the rhythm, as in the harmonic vision and the elements of ambiences, Check Out draws us into a melodious rhythm, like a ballad we've never heard formed.
Definitely, Kontroll-Raum delivers a solid album that sets the bar high for what's next for Broekhuis, Keller & Schönwälder. There is a rhythmic dynamic in this album that reminds us of BKS's saturation with their colorful craze. CHECK IN is a great album that reconnects us with the first more daring ones of our friend Mario with Detlev Keller.
